It is a common understanding that motorcyclists are at a greater risk of injury when traveling than other drivers. While drivers of cars, SUV's and other vehicles have the protection of their fully enclosed and air bag equipped surroundings, motorcyclists have nothing protecting their body from collision. This danger is especially apparent for two Utah individuals after their motorcycle versus van collision left the cyclist fighting for his life and the other driver unharmed.
The motorcyclist, an off-duty officer, was traveling on a Utah highway when a van pulled out directly in front of him while trying to make a left turn. The cyclist was unable to avoid the van and collided with the driver's side door. Emergency personnel were dispatched and had to transport the off-duty officer by ambulance to a hospital before being taken by chopper elsewhere with critical injuries. Authorities report that the officer was being treated for a serious head injury as he was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.
The driver of the van did not suffer an injury, and the crash is being investigated. While alcohol and speed do not seem to be a factor, the driver's decision to pull out in front of the cyclist may be in question. It has been a long mission of the motorcycle community to increase the awareness of other drivers to the number of cyclists on the road. Depending on the details of each accident, a driver's lack of consideration for cyclists on the road could be seen as negligence.
If you or a loved one has suffered injury or loss because of a distracted driver or other negligent act, speaking to a personal injury attorney may be helpful. With their experience and knowledge, it is possible to identify responsible parties and hold them accountable for their negligent behavior.
